Hours after repeating a line about wanting to “injure that quarterback,” Texas Longhorns Fox end Breckyn Hager issued an apology through the school that expressed contrition for his comments about Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The situation drew national attention, as well as a response from Mahomes’ father, former major league pitcher Pat Mahomes.

While Hager’s effort level is commendable and beyond reproach, he’s going through a learning curve as a public representative for Texas football, so the apology represents the necessary first step for him.
Hager is a talented and compelling figure, so he’s earned the opportunity to address the media. Now he has to ensure that his words consistently reflect his own character and the character of the university.
