After leaving the game against West Virginia in the first quarter, Texas linebacker Malik Jefferson was not able to work out with the team on Sunday as he goes through concussion protocol this week.

As a result, his status for this weekend’s game against Kansas in Lawrence is still unclear.

The preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year struggled throughout much of the season, ultimately leading to his benching late against Kansas State and two games spent out of the starting lineup.

A re-energized Jefferson candidly admitted that he “wasn’t trying to get better” before a visit from his mother and benching by the coaches got his attention.

However, despite the inconsistent nature of the sophomore’s season, he’s second on the team in tackles (60), tackles for loss (7.5), and sacks (4.5).
