In the Internet era of recruiting, the Texas Longhorns landed only one prospect on National Signing Day while Mack Brown was the head coach, but have picked up five recruits on the big day during the last two seasons combined -- three in 2014, both defensive tackles, and three last year, including flips from Ryan Newsome and PJ Locke.
This year, though? The 2016 cycle will produce fireworks unlike anything Texas fans have ever seen before, as 14 Longhorns targets will make their respective destinations known after Strong and his staff picked up four pledges in six days heading into recruitnik Christmas.
Even relatively conservative estimations have Texas picking up five or six more pledges Wednesday, a haul that would rank as historic by a large margin and likely vault the Longhorns to a near top-15 ranking nationally. If even more prospects fall into place? There's certainly a shot at cracking the top 10, though a finish between 10 and 15 is probably most likely. Remaining in the mid-20s seems highly unlikely.
If Strong can close with this group by pulling off another miraculous finish, he'll have the class he's been adamant for months that he needed to help put Texas over the top. The installation of the new offense and ability to find a quarterback will determine the team's destiny in 2016 to a large extent, but there's no substitute for adding the depth to deal with injuries and fill in a few gaps in talent.
