Post-game commiseration thread: Northern Iowa drops Texas on a miracle buzzer-beater

Ouch. That hurts.

Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Longhorns battled and fought back against the Northern Iowa Panthers after falling behind early and even tied the game with 2.7 seconds left when point guard Isaiah Taylor made a driving basket following Northern Iowa star Wes Washpun missing the second of two free throws.

And then the improbable happened -- Paul Jespersen heaved a last-second shot from behind halfcourt and the shot flew true, banking in at the buzzer to end the season for the Longhorns in excruciating fashion, 75-72:

It was a well-played game after what was overall a remarkable season from Texas, but it hurts to end up on the wrong side of this. At the same time, Northern Iowa played well enough throughout most of the game to be deserving of the win and capitalized at the end with an amazing play.

And so Longhorns fans will be Panthers fans on Sunday against the Aggies, but it will be with more than a little twinge of bittersweetness.
