An impressive performance in the Orange and White game on Saturday by Texas Longhorns quarterback Shane Buechele will be the talk of the offseason, but head coach Charlie Strong declined to name a winner in the ongoing competition for the starting job there. In fact, while he wants to name a starter "way before" the season opener against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on September 4, he expects a "great" quarterback competition during fall camp.
Strong described the scrimmage as a good day overall and opted to end the game after the first half in no small part because he was happy to escape it without any injuries. In fact, while a number of players missed the game, none are expected to miss a significant portion of summer conditioning or fall camp as a result of those injuries.
The competition level was also a positive thing for the head coach, who will get an infusion of talent along the offensive and defensive lines this fall to help further combat the depth issues that impacted his decision to cancel the second half.
