Texas Longhorns head coach Shaka Smart would ideally like to add two more bigs to his 2016-17 roster, so the staff is continuing to conduct evaluations as it awaits a decision from local five-star forward Jarrett Allen. On Wednesday, San Jacinto CC forward Candido Sa will receive a visit from the Longhorns, according to Texas Top 100.
Sa is a 6'9, 215-pound shot blocker from Portugal who previously spent time at Colegio Bartoloemeou Dias before heading to the United State to continue his basketball career. As a freshman at San Jacinto, Sa played about 20 minutes per game and averaged 4.9 points and 5.5 rebounds a game, along with 65 total blocks. There's some shooting touch there, as he made 67.1 percent from the free-throw line and 27.6 percent of his three-point attempts, but he's not a particularly efficient scorer at this time.
When projecting his potential for improvement, the major qualifier is that he's set to turn 24 in July -- he's not likely to grow his game a great deal in the next two years.
The 247Sports profile for Sa doesn't list any offers, but he did visit Rutgers for an official visit last week and is also receiving interest from Western Kentucky and Pittsburgh. According Rivals, Baylor is evaluating Sa and Rutgers has extended an offer.
With the low-post scoring ability of Shaq Cleare and incoming freshman James Banks likely to receive some help from Allen's eventual addition -- though that's not a certainty at this time -- Sa would be a solid addition as a shot blocker who can run the floor and finish around the rim.
At this point, it doesn't really matter that Sa is so lightly considered as a recruit because Smart needs to find some bodies and Sa looks like a candidate to fill a role that would benefit the team.
