Malik Jefferson among those on Preseason Bednarik Award Watch List

Not only is Texas Longhorns sophomore linebacker Malik Jefferson one of the elite talents at his position, but also he’s one of college football’s premier defensive players, evident is Jefferson being named to the 2016 Preseason Watch List for the Benarik Award. Each season, the Bednarik Award is given to the nation’s top defender and after a Freshman All-American-caliber season in Austin, Jefferson is among those expected to contend for the NCAA’s highest defensive honor.

This news comes only days after the 2015 Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year was named a Sporting News Preseason All-American after totaling 61 tackles in 11 games.

A Longhorn has never won the Bednarik Award so Jefferson will likely have the opportunity to make history in what will be at least two more seasons at Texas. Jefferson came to Texas with the intention of making history and helping turn a once-prominent program back in the right direction, but I’m sure he’d accept some nice hardware as a bonus along the way.
