WATCH: Texas QBs complete deep passes in Saturday’s scrimmage

The highlight was the long touchdown throw from Buechele to Heard.

For the second time during fall camp, the Texas Longhorns scrimmaged on Saturday morning at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and both quarterbacks competing for the starting job were able to create big plays in the passing game.

The highlight was probably a touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Shane Buechele to sophomore wide receiver Jerrod Heard that head coach Charlie Strong thought went for about 50 yards.

As sophomore nickel back PJ Locke closed on the former quarterback running a vertical route, Buechele dropped the ball right into Heard’s hands in the end zone, prompting Heard to break into a dance.

The ball might not have been dead in stride to Heard, but if it wasn’t, he was only off by a full-speed step or so.

Senior quarterback Tyrone Swoopes appeared to complete a long vertical route of his own to freshman wide receiver Collin Johnson down the sideline on a spectacular diving catch. Since he fell on the football and then rolled away from the camera, it was hard to tell if would have stood up to instant replay, but it was a fantastic effort nonetheless.

There was no question about the completion on another pass, as Swoopes hit junior wide receiver Jake Oliver for a touchdown of around 40 yards on what was likely a post route out of the slot against senior safety Dylan Haines. Swoopes often struggles with his touch on those throws and forced Johnson to dive on his other pass, but the ball was weighted correctly on the throw to Oliver.

In the running game, the scrimmage featured some goal-line work that included a touchdown dive by junior running back D’Onta Foreman and a tackle for loss by freshman linebacker Demarco Boyd crashing on a counter trey.

As he does so often, however, freshman running back Kyle Porter was able to fall forward after the hit to minimize the loss — squaring him up isn’t enough to stop his progress because he’s so low and strong and keeps driving his legs.

Porter had another solid run on the day that ended in an open-field tackle by sophomore safety DeShon Elliott, though Porter was once again able to fall forward after contact.

Sophomore linebacker Anthony Wheeler flashed twice in the highlights, slicing through openings to make tackles on running backs near the line of scrimmage.

There was an interception shown, as senior cornerback Sheroid Evans was able to secure a deflection off the hands of junior wide receiver Dorian Leonard on a slant pass from Buechele.

After getting beat by Johnson on the diving catch, sophomore cornerback Holton Hill broke up a hitch intended for the freshman on a pass from Buechele that was a little bit late in getting out.
