Following an unexpectedly competitive weekend of college football, the Texas Longhorns were able to use a 41-7 win over the UTEP Miners to move up four spots in the USA Today Coaches Poll, from No. 20 to No. 16.

Texas was able to capitalize on the struggles of Ole Miss and three other Big 12 teams — Baylor was largely unimpressive against SMU and both TCU and Oklahoma State dropped out of the top 25 following losses.

The Miners were hardly an opponent that improved the strength of schedule or added another big win to the Longhorns’ post-season resume, but the movement suggests a fundamental truth — just keep winning and keep moving up, a task that becomes much easier as opponents struggle in games that should be easy victories.

In the AP Poll, Texas remained at No. 11.
