After a long period of silence from the Texas Longhorns, athletic director Mike Perrin released a statement on Tuesday addressing the hire of quality control coach Casey Horny.
Following Horny’s hire last week, the former Baylor staffer came under criticism for his connection to and support of a culture of interpersonal violence while in Waco. In fact, Horny tweeted support for disgraced former head coach Art Briles on multiple occasions, then deleted some of those tweets following his hire by Texas.
Numerous Longhorns fans voiced their displeasure with the hire on social media and in emails to members of the Texas administration.
However, Perrin said that he personally interviewed Horny, a former Texas graduate assistant for the Longhorns with new head coach Tom Herman, about his time at Baylor.
“The University of Texas does not tolerate sexual assault and is firmly committed to preventing it on our campus. We are working every day to continue our culture of preparing students to win with integrity in academics, in athletics and in life,” Perrin said in a statement.
“Before approving the hiring, I spoke at length with coach Horny and reviewed his background and his role at previous universities,” he added, likely an unusual decision during the hiring process of a low-level staffer. “Coach Horny committed to Coach Herman and me that he is in total alignment with our culture of integrity at The University of Texas.
“Like others, I question coach Horny supporting some commentary on social media. After further discussion with Coach Horny, he understands such actions will not be tolerated at Texas.”
Reporters had planned to question Herman about Horny at his National Signing Day press conference when Texas initially refused to comment on the hire.
