Texas promotes Mike Morrell to assistant basketball coach

The move comes days after David Cason left the program.

After spending one season as the director of basketball operations for the Texas Longhorns, Mike Morrell is once again back on head coach Shaka Smart’s bench in the role of assistant coach, a position that he occupied during Smart’s first season in Austin.

"It's extremely important that our staff is in complete alignment," Smart said. "Mike has been tremendously loyal, hard-working and productive over the years as a member of our staff. We're excited about what he will do as an assistant coach here moving forward."

Regarded as a good recruiter and a team player after moving from the bench to the support role to allow Texas to retain rising assistant Jai Lucas, Morrell replaces departed assistant David Cason, whose contract was not renewed last week.

Morrell will likely take over Cason’s role working with the point guards.

The Tennessee native has longstanding ties to Smart, having worked with him at Clemson before joining him at VCU, where he was an integral part of the program’s success under Smart.
