On Monday, Frisco Wakeland offensive tackle Rafiti Ghirmai is set to make his commitment:
I will be committing on August 21st‼️
— Rafiti Ghirmai (@RafitiGhirmai) August 7, 2017
Ghirmai is expected to announce at 6 p.m. CT.
The 6’4, 290-pounder is the top offensive tackle target for the Texas Longhorns, which currently holds a pledge at the position from Seminole offensive tackle Reese Moore. However, since Moore is a developmental project who currently checks in at 265 pounds, offensive line coach Derek Warehime is looking for offensive tackles who could contribute more quickly than Moore.
And Ghirmai, the state’s third-ranked offensive tackle, is exactly that player.
In the middle of July, Ghirmai named Texas as one of his top six schools, along with Alabama, Florida, LSU, Miami, and UCLA. While the Tigers remain in the mix, the two perceived favorites heading into his decision are the Bruins and the Longhorns.
When Ghirmai announced the date of his choice in early August, UCLA was trended heavily in the 247Sports Crystal Ball. However, on Friday, word started to get out around the industry that the ‘Horns had surged into the lead, with 13 predictions coming in for Texas in the final moments of his recruitment.
A consensus four-star prospect, Ghirmai ranks as the No. 282 player nationally, the No. 21 offensive tackle, and the No. 37 player in Texas, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
