The battle for the starting right tackle spot now has a different dynamic for the Texas Longhorns after junior Elijah Rodriguez went down with what was described as a “lower leg injury” during practice on Tuesday.
Once a candidate to be the first offensive lineman off the bench for the ‘Horns this season, Rodriguez rather unexpectedly ascended to a spot on the first team during the opening stretch of preseason camp, but had to be helped off the field following the injury to his right leg.
The school is expected to provide an update on the severity of the injury at some point on Tuesday.
Junior tight end Garrett Gray also left the field with an injury during the team’s eighth practice.
One day after suffering a toe sprain, sophomore defensive end Malcolm Roach dressed, but sat out practice with a walking boot on his foot. On Monday, Roach had x-rays on that foot, but based on the fact that the Louisiana native was in shoulder pads on Tuesday, it appears that the x-rays were negative.
Junior running back Kirk Johnson practiced in pads for the first time since suffering a hamstring issue when preseason camp opened on July 31.
