Defensive coordinator Todd Orlando can now begin preparing his Texas Longhorns for redshirt freshman quarterback Montel Aaron, who will start for the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday, head coach Brent Brennan announced on Tuesday.

The former high school standout from Antelope, Calif. made his debut against South Florida in the season opener, completing 7-of-13 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown in a back-up role.

Sophomore Josh Love struggled against the Bulls with three interceptions and then got off to a slow start in the second game, resulting in his benching during the second quarter.

Aaron was efficient in leading San Jose State to Brennan’s first victory as a head coach, connecting on 11-of-17 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns.

At 6’5 and 210 pounds, Aaron has prototypical size for a pocket passer that helped him earn offers from Temple and UNLV out of high school, among other schools.

However, given that he has three rushing attempts in two games, the quarterback run game is not going to be a part of the offense for the Spartans moving forward, which eases the preparation demands for Orlando.

Texas kicks off against San Jose St. at 2:30 p.m. CT on Longhorn Network.
