Recruits react to Texas’ 48-45 victory over Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown

On Saturday afternoon, the Texas Longhorns took yet another major step towards national prominence with a 48-45 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Showdown.

As a result, Texas has now moved up in the national rankings to the No. 9 spot, which is territory the Horns haven’t been familiar with since 2010. With Tom Herman and company taking care of business on the field, it’s only going to create more momentum on the recruiting trail. Burnt Orange Nation spoke with a number of recruits that were moved by the Longhorns performance.

2019

Tyler Owens — 4-Star S — Plano East — Texas commit: “As I said before, only up from here! OU wasn’t ready!”

Kenyatta Watson — 4-Star CB — Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) — Texas commit: “It was exciting to watch and I can’t wait to play in the [Red River Rivalry]. Great team win.”

David Gbenda — 4-star ILB — Cinco Ranch — Texas commit: [Defense] didn’t stop! They did not let up! My overall thoughts were... HOOK’EM!”

Peter Mpagi — 3-Star DE — George Ranch — Texas commit: “OU Sucks!”

T’Vondre Sweat — 3-Star DE — Huntsville— Texas commit: “Texas is on a mission. Hook’Em!”

Marques Caldwell — 3-Star CB — Alvin — Texas commit: “Loved what I saw. It was an all around team win. We worked together throughout the whole game. It wasn’t a one sided (offensive/defensive) win. This was a TEAM win.”

Elijah Higgins — 4-Star WR — Austin Bowie: “Crazy win! Texas is getting a lot of momentum.”

2020

Bryson Washington — 4-Star S — C.E. King: “Man, it was a great game. I was going for both and they both did good. Its just that UT pulled it through.”

Damieon George — 4-Star OT — North Shore: “Both teams fought hard, but it came down to who wanted it more in the trenches and UT accepted the fight and dominated.”

Jake Majors — 3-Star OT — Prosper: “It was a huge win for Tom Herman and the Horns! They have something special going on at The Forty Acres.”

Avery Helm — 3-Star CB — Fort Bend Marshall: “The Horns are in the process of being special. Game by game they are building on their success!”

2021

Tunmise Adeleye — SDE — Katy Tompkins: “I’m not surprised at all that Texas pulled away with the win today. It’s a testament to the new culture that Herman has instilled in to his players. I’m expecting big things from Texas this year and in the coming years.”

Hayden Conner — 4-Star OT — Katy Taylor: “Huge statement made by UT today defeating the number 7 team. The offense is progressing, but isn’t even close to being to their full potential yet!”
