The matchup between the Texas Longhorns and the Texas Tech Red Raiders is always circled on the calendar, but this year’s matchup carries major significance in the Big 12 title race. A loss by either team effectively removes them from contention for the conference title game, while a win could position the Longhorns as having an outside shot at making it to Jerry World.

Most importantly, the Horns are staring at a two-game losing streak, mainly a result of defensive struggles unprecedented in the Tom Herman era — this game is hugely important to getting the season back on track after the six-game winning streak massively increased expectations.

Texas will also look to continue to odd winning streaks in this series, as the visiting team has won in each of the last four seasons.

For the Texas Longhorns in the second season under defensive coordinator Todd Orlando, the reality of early departures for the NFL, previous recruiting mistakes, and the attrition that comes as a result of coaching changes have resulted in a disappointing defense sent over the edge by injuries and suspensions.

When it was all said and done, West Virginia’s 578 total yards was the most Texas has surrendered in 22 games under Orlando’s guidance, while the Mountaineers’ 346 yards through the air was the most allowed since USC’s 397 in 2017, and WVU’s 232 yards gained on the ground was the largest total Texas has allowed since Maryland scampered for 263 yards to spoil Herman’s debut.
