Tracking every Texas player still eligible to redshirt this season

With 13 games down and only one remaining for the Texas Longhorns this season — the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans against the Georgia Bulldogs — it seems like a good time to look back on the participation chart for the players who are set for redshirt seasons.

Under new NCAA rules, players can participate in as many as four games without sacrificing a season of eligibility. As a result, Texas coaches have carefully managed the playing time of numerous players, including non-freshman who hadn’t already used a redshirt.

The first casualty of this approach was junior running back Kyle Porter, who appeared in the first four games, but has not played since. A preseason camp injury slowed down senior wide receiver John Burt, so he won’t appear in the bowl game after playing four games. However, fellow senior Jamari Chisholm, a defensive lineman, will be available after appearing in only three games so far this season.

Other non-freshman who will redshirt this season? Junior quarterback Shane Buechele, junior offensive lineman Denzel Okafor, and sophomore running back Toneil Carter.

In the freshman class, wide receiver Malcolm Epps, linebacker Ayodele Adeoye, defensive lineman Moro Ojomo, and nose tackle Keondre Coburn have all appeared in three or fewer games — each will be available against Georgia without putting their season of eligibility at least.

A handful of freshmen haven’t seen the field at all, including all four of the offensive linemen, two defensive linemen, linebacker Bryon Vaughns, and wide receiver Al’vonte Woodard.
