Texas Longhorns baseball suffered key players graduating, several transfers, and eight underclassmen leaving the program for the MLB draft in 2017, but expectations are still high for the program in David Pierce’s second year.
The Longhorns are ranked No.3 team in the conference in the 2018 Big 12 Preseason Coaches’ Poll that was released on Thursday. Texas Tech is ranked first for the first time since 1999, while TCU is the other team ranked ahead of the ‘Horns at second.
Closely trailing the Longhorns in the rankings is Oklahoma and West Virginia, two programs on the rise despite not being traditional powerhouses in the conference.
Kansas and Oklahoma State are tied for sixth in the voting, Baylor landed at eight, and Kansas State rounded out the conference with the least amount of votes.
Texas will play an alumni game on February 3 at 2 pm CST at Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns will officially begin their season on February 16 at home against UL-Lafayette.
Expect more preseason baseball coverage soon leading up to Opening Day.
