Getting Flower Mound Marcus linebacker Marcel Brooks on campus last weekend wasn’t enough to keep the Texas Longhorns in the mix with the state’s top linebacker as Brooks released his top two schools on Wednesday:

As indicated, those schools are Alabama and LSU, with a decision coming down from the 6’3, 200-pounder on June 25.
The reigning national champions look like the current leaders, while LSU overtook schools like Oklahoma and Texas that were supposed contenders at various points in the recruitment of Brooks.
Now the ‘Horns will have to continue to evaluate in-state options. Right now, none of those prospects currently rank above No. 75 in the state. And there’s more pressure to land legitimate out-of-state options like California product De’Gabriel Floyd, who visited last weekend and has an Austin connection.
Given the desperate need in the class for linebackers — arguably the biggest need in the entire cycle for the Longhorns — missing out on the state’s top linebacker in a weak year in state isn’t a particularly positive development.
