Days after helping the Texas Longhorns close out the Austin Regional with a save against the Indiana Hoosiers, pitcher Chase Shugart was selected in the 12th round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox:

The 5’10, 180-pounder is short for a pitcher, but he has a plus, good breaking ball, and an extremely competitive mentality on the mound.
Shugart began his career at Texas as a relief pitcher, notching a 4.53 ERA while saving five games as a freshman. Command issues as a sophomore cost him that job before he moved into the weekend rotation as a junior. His strikeout numbers suffered some in that role and he continued to walk too many batters, but demonstrated that he could stretch his arm out if necessary.
At the next level, Shugart projects as a reliever and will almost certainly sign with the Red Sox by the July 6 deadline.
