The latest on where things stand with the Longhorns in preseason camp.

AUSTIN, Texas — Burnt Orange Nation was among the members of the media present for Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman’s post-practice media availability on Thursday.

A few notes from availability:

  • Senior wide receiver John Burt sprained his foot. He’s expected to be back for practice during game week. The situation is similar for senior cornerback Davante Davis, who suffered a hamstring injury, is also expected back for game week. Freshman safety Caden Sterns was spotted with a wrap on his left shoulder following practice, but Herman said it was just a bruise.
  • Former offensive coordinator Greg Davis and actor Matthew McConaughey were out at practice, which was held in the Bubble.
  • Saturday’s scrimmage, the second of preseason camp, will be critical in determining the depth chart. Herman referred to this stretch of camp as having the potential to become monotonous, but he’s happy with how his players have responded.
  • Freshman quarterbacks Cameron Rising and Casey Thompson aren’t offcially out of the mix to earn the starting job, but Herman cited the importance of experience in a season opener.
  • Junior Shane Buechele and sophomore Sam Ehlinger continue to compete for the starting job and tend to go back and forth in terms of which player is performing better on any given day. It’s not a bad problem to have, but Herman wants to see one of them separate for a consistent period of time before naming a starter. The good news is that Herman says they’ve been improving because of how hard they’ve been pushing each other.
  • Herman expects to play three running backs against Maryland. Right now, those players will likely be sophomore Daniel Young, graduate transfer Tre Watson, and freshman Keaontay Ingram. The freshman has drawn praise some teammates in recent days because of his speed and his wiggle.
  • In the slot, freshman Joshua Moore is drawing attention for his speed and quickness, prompting Herman to give his mother a call to congratulate her on how well she’s raised his son. Freshman D’Shawn Jamison is also in the mix to earn playing time there, as both players provide a change of pace to junior Lil’Jordan Humphrey.
  • Moore and Jamison are also competing for the job of returning punts following the departure of Reggie Hemphill-Mapps and the graduation of Armanti Foreman.
  • When asked about the linebacker position, Herman indicated that his level of concern is high following injuries to three players. Texas may have to spend more time in the Lightning package as a result, but the leading contender to take over there, freshman DeMarvion Overshown, is injured as well.
