Here we go again.

Coming off of a 7-6 season that featured the first bowl win for the Texas Longhorns since 2012, head coach Tom Herman’s team is ranked No. 23 in the preseason AP Poll released on Monday.

Texas ranks as the No. 4 team in the Big 12 Conference, behind Oklahoma (No. 7), TCU (No. 16), and West Virginia (No. 17). In the preseason conference poll, the Horns slotted in the same spot, but with the Mountaineers and Horned Frogs flipped in front of them.

The perennial question is whether Texas can live up to that ranking after failing to meet expectations for years. And despite some consistent national optimism, there’s been considerable regional skepticism about the Longhorns as a result.

At this time last year, the asked the pertinent question.

“Well, it’s done: Texas, in the AP poll, is ranked No. 23 to start the season. How long before it becomes obvious that was a mistake?”

In fact, it only took one game for the Horns to get exposed by falling in the disastrous home opener to Maryland.

Hopefully this will be the year that Texas actually lives up to that preseason ranking.
