The Texas Longhorns have stated all season that their primary goal is to compete for a Big 12 championship, and that journey starts this week against the TCU Horned Frogs.
This game may come down to which sophomore quarterback is able to turn in a better performance, Texas’s Sam Ehlinger or TCU’s Shawn Robinson. Ehlinger struggled with consistency a year ago, but may have solved the problem, turning in three 200-yard, two-touchdown performances through three games. TCU’s Shawn Robinson yardage totals have grown week-to-week, but threw two interceptions against Ohio State and fumbled in the end zone.
Going 3-1 to start the season would be yet another milestone in the long Longhorns journey back to national prominence. Texas hasn’t started a season 3-1 since 2012, which was also the last time Texas managed to reach nine wins.
- Texas put the win over USC behind them and focused on going 1-0 to start conference play.
“I don’t think there is a guy on this team — they care about this year and they care about this week and they care about going 1-0 this week and that’s all the motivation they need, really.”
- TCU head coach Gary Patterson is one of the pioneers of the 4-2-5 defense, which has been instrumental in his success over the last 19 seasons.
- After missing the USC game due to injury, running back Keontay Ingram is available Saturday against TCU.
- Don’t expect the Horned Frogs to have a letdown after losing a tough game against Ohio State.
But, one thing about Gary — he knows how to keep his team from getting too high or too low.
- What lessons from the win against USC can Texas take into its matchup against TCU?
- The Horned Frogs have owned Texas since joining the Big 12 and have done so in dominant fashion.
All told, TCU has outscored Texas 153-33 over that stretch of four games, an average margin of 38-8. The Longhorns have only scored more than 13 points against the Horned Frogs once in that stretch — the 30-7 win in 2013.
