Today was a busy news day for the Texas Longhorn football program, with Tom Herman announcing that several of his assistants were either fired or reassigned to new positions this afternoon.

With coaching changes like this there is often ramifications in recruiting and it didn’t take long for Texas to have a defector, as four star defensive lineman Van Fillinger announced he would be re-opening his recruitment.
I will be DECOMMITING from Texas and REOPENING my recruitment.

While losing Fillinger is less than ideal, Fillinger was the lone casualty on the day and a number of the current commits took to Twitter to let everyone know that they were still solid to the Longhorns despite sweeping changes being made on the coaching staff.
Guys like Vernon Broughton, Prince Dorbah, Xavion Alford, and Troy Omeire all made sure to chime in short order to let Longhorn fans know where they stand.

While things could always change in recruiting, this is encouraging sign for Texas that the nucleus of their recruiting class is sticking together and showing solidarity despite the moves that were made this afternoon.
Rival programs will still most certainly take their best shot and try to get their foot back in the door with some of the Longhorn commits, but as things sit the recruiting class is holding together and seeing where things go with the pending coaching hires.
Tom Herman getting these hires right is incredibly important for recruiting in the short term so that it can provide a jolt of momentum heading in NSD1 later this month and then to NSD2 in February.
Get them right and Texas is able to salvage its class and potentially right the ship in 2020 with a new schemes in place on both sides of the ball.
Needless to say, Herman’s long term future is riding on these hires.
No pressure, coach.
