This could be the start of something big.

This coming season puts me in mind of a Texas season over a half century ago. In 1968, Texas was coming off 3 awful seasons by Darrell Royal standards. There was a ton of talent on hand that year but that talent was relatively inexperienced and hadn't played together much (especially not in the new offense (the Wishbone) that Texas broke in that year).

Because of the obvious talent, Texas began the year ranked #4 in the country; but it took those players about half a season to mesh and to really hit their stride behind their cocky (in a good way) junior QB. Sound familiar?

The '68 team tied Houston in the opener and lost the second game of the season to Tech to drop out of the top 20. From there, they beat an overmatched OSU in Austin but struggled to beat OU by six and Arky by ten the following week. After that, it was all over. Nobody stayed within 3 TDs of them the rest of the way including #8 Tenn in the Cotton Bowl game. Texas was the best team in the country at the end of 1968 even though they finished #5 in the polls.

The program overall went 30-0 over a stretch of three years.

This could very well be where the program is today . . . .
