Following this past week’s 11-4 road victory at Rice and weekend series win over Purdue (W 7-2, W 13-6, L 0-4, W 3-0), the Texas Longhorns moved up to No. 22 in D1Baseball’s latest Top 25. After failing to convert with runners on base and getting blanked in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Longhorns struck with three runs in the first inning and kept that lead the rest of the way on Sunday to secure the series win.
This week’s schedule features two midweek home games against the Sam Houston State Bearkats and UTSA Roadrunners. The Bearkats are currently hold a 5-1 record and are coming off a weekend sweep over Louisiana, who Texas faced to start the season. Meanwhile, the UTSA Roadrunners are off to a 5-3 start to their season.
After the two midweek games, the No. 2 LSU Tigers will come to Austin for a monumental three-game weekend series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 75-39 on their way to a 7-0 start this season. Despite the impressive start, however, the schedule has consisted of non-conference games against UL-Monroe, Army, Air Force, SE Louisiana, and Bryant so far.
It’ll be important to get starting pitcher Blair Henley on track this week, especially with LSU’s explosive top-to-bottom lineup coming to town. The 3-4 hitters for the Tigers — Antoine Duplantis and Daniel Cabera — have combined for six home runs and 29 runs batted in through seven games. In his first two starts, Henley gave up eight earned runs in 8.2 innings of work.
Throughout this baseball season, we’ll provide a weekly update on where Texas stands in each of the college baseball ranking systems every Monday. For the sake of the ranking systems, we’ll be using D1Baseball, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game, RPI, and the USA Today Coaches Poll for our weekly ranking sources.
