Like many other Californians, the No. 12 Texas Longhorns make their way to Austin this week. After losing three of their last four games against a tough No. 4 Stanford Cardinal squad, the Longhorns look to get back to their winning ways with a single game against the Texas Southern Tigers at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
You may recognize Texas Southern — they finished their season at UFCU Disch-Falk Field last year after advancing to the Austin Regional in the NCAA Tournament. They lost to Texas 10-0 in the first round, before bowing out of the tournament. Texas is 11-0 all-time against Texas Southern.
The Longhorns return home limping after a dismantling series defeat in Palo Alto. After taking the first game 4-0, Texas lost the final three games by a combined score of 3-21. Tonight’s game is a critical rebound game for the Longhorns, as their upcoming schedule leaves them little room for error. Following Texas Southern, Texas will host No. 11 Texas Tech and No. 14 Arkansas — two teams that appeared in the CWS last season and went a combined 4-2 against the Horns last year.
However, a game against Texas Southern might just be what this team needs.
This season, Texas Southern, to put it lightly, has struggled. The Tigers enter tonight’s game with a 2-10 record, and have been outscored this season to an obscene tune of 53-162. To put this in perspective, on average, TSU gives up 13.5 runs per game. For a Texas team that his struggled on offense this year, a Horn can only hope this match up plays to the average and serves as some batting practice for Texas.
The starting pitchers for either team have yet to be announced.
Tonight’s game is set to begin at 6:30 PM CT. You can weather the gloomy skies at the Disch tonight, or catch the action live on Longhorn Network or 104.9 The Horn.
