For the first time since the series against the West Virginia Mountaineers, the Texas Longhorns will take the field on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field for a revenge game against the Incarnate Word Cardinals, 3-2 winners over the Longhorns in San Antonio in late March.
The loss featured three runs in the first two innings by Incarnate Word and a tepid offensive performance for Texas, which only managed four hits.
And though it’s not much consolation for a program that has lost 10 of the last 11 games and expects to beat a program like the Cardinals in every matchup, UIW does have its most wins overall (34) and most conference wins (17) since 2011, when it was a Division II program. As a result, the Cardinals will participate in the Southland Conference tournament for the first time ever. UIW also boasts Power Five wins over Notre Dame and Texas A&M.
Right fielder Sean Arnold leads the way for UIW with a .330 batting average, along with five home runs and 35 RBI, but there are also four other hitters on the team with higher averages — this is a group that hits .313 overall and has 60 home runs.
Freshman right-hander Coy Cobb (0-3, 3.99 ERA) has the task of slowing down those efficient and powerful bats as he goes against fellow freshman right-hander Christian Vega (0-0, 3.66 ERA). Cobb hasn’t lasted more than three innings in a start since a strong seven-inning performance against Xavier in late March and walked five batters against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in his last appearance.
First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. Central on Longhorn Network and 104.9 The Horn.
