Running Back talk

I’m of the opinion that we shouldn’t just settle for a secondary target at RB this year when we’re carrying at least 2 quality backs into the 2020 season and all signs point to brown being able to play and he’s a solid number 2 in my opinion. If Danny Young doesn’t grad transfer we’ll be very healthy at the position. Also the biggest in state back in ‘21 is trending our way right now ( and obviously it’s still very early). It obviously sucks if we end up whiffing on Evans, Mclellan, and Robinson, but it’s understandable seeing as how there’s a clearer path to burn for them at schools that have been more successful for the majority of their lives. I don’t think I’m crazy for saying let’s just hold off and maybe snag a guy out of the portal who would have to sit a year to plug that gap on the depth chart. It definitely seems as though the strategy at that spot this year was to take an all or nothing approach which we could actually afford to do. Another strong year on the field will help a lot with the negative pitches and views on the program these top recruits are seeing.

My thoughts on Drayton as a recruiter is that he certainly has plenty of the obvious -and for some- the most important pitch to an elite back which is early playing time and an elite o line. The fact is that our top two backs are underclassmen and even though coach hand has done miracles in such a short time for the o-line, we’ve had what 2 drafted in the last decade? Meanwhile OU just sent 4 to the league with some studs behind them, Bama and Clemson are turning into the NFL D-league, and OSU and UGA are pitching guys early burn and maybe be the only ones who could even stay competitive with the big 2 right now. So let’s calm down on forcing staff moves just to get Beaty or Fedora out on the trail. If we win games, and more importantly win BIG games, the players will come. A&M is trapped in SEC west hell and there’s no signs that they’ll manage to be better then 3rd in that division any given year while we may be able to start pitching a real path to titles with a more winnable schedule.

PS. Jake Smith can totally get 3-7 touches out of the backfield a game if you’re really concerned about depth at that spot.
