Big 12 Media Days are next week at AT&T Stadium in Arlington (July 15-16) and on Monday the conference announced the attendees for each program, with the Texas Longhorns revealing that junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger, senior wide receiver Collin Johnson, senior safety Brandon Jones, senior defensive end Malcolm Roach, senior center Zach Shackelford, and senior linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch are all set to accompany head coach Tom Herman north up I-35.

Unsurprisingly, Herman opted to take his older team leaders to Arlington with him, so there aren’t any remarkable inclusions on this list or any significant exclusions.
The most intriguing attendee is McCulloch, a highly-rated recruit out of high school who is yet to make a consistent impact, but had a strong spring and is expected to anchor a young and inexperienced linebacker corps.
From a historical perspective, the most notable attendee is Ehlinger, the team’s unquestioned leader and the only non-senior invited. His inclusion is notable because the Longhorns have only brought three quarterbacks to Big 12 Media Days since Colt McCoy’s final season in 2019 — Garrett Gilbert in 2010 and David Ash in 2013.
Neither of those quarterbacks had particularly successful seasons, as Gilbert struggled in his first season as a starter and eventually transferred a year later, while Ash suffered a concussion that year and only appeared in one game after the 2013 season before his career ended due to persistent concussions.
Ehlinger hopes to reserve that trend in 2019 as he attempts to cement his status as one of the nation’s top quarterbacks.
