- With sophomore Brennan Eagles sidelined for part of preseason camp due to arthroscopic surgery on his elbow, senior John Burt is the surprise starter at the Z receiver position, aided by the move of redshirt freshman Al’Vonte Woodard to X and the suspension of sophomore Joshua Moore.
- Offensive line coach Herb Hand likes to ride with his five best offensive linemen, but it looks like redshirt freshman Junior Angilau and graduate transfer Parker Braun will rotate at the left guard spot against Louisiana Tech.
- Defensive coordinator Todd Orlando cross trains his linebackers, but it’s notable that sophomore Juwan Mitchell has made enough of an impact at Mac to earn a role as a co-starter, while freshman David Gbenda and sophomore Caleb Johnson are working at Rover.
- A strong preseason camp for sophomore Kobe Boyce has him listed ahead of sophomore D’Shawn Jamison, leaving sophomore Anthony Cook as the back up to sophomore Jalen Green, who looks like he’ll start the season as the team’s best cornerback.
- Inside at nickel, it’s certainly no surprise that sophomore BJ Foster won the job over junior Josh Thompson. Given Foster’s admitted need to improve in areas like man coverage, block destruction, and block separation, earning the starting role bodes well for his ability to do those things effectively.
- Look for freshman Jake Smith to make an impact on special teams after two seasons of mediocrity on kick returns and punt returns.
