The continued drama from last weekend’s football game will add to the storylines when Shaka Smart’s former assistant comes to Austin in January.

On Saturday, Jan. 25, the Texas Longhorns and LSU Tigers will tip off at the Erwin Center at 1 p.m. Central on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, the network revealed on Thursday.

The two schools haven’t faced off on the hardwood since Texas beat LSU in overtime in Houston in 2006. The Tigers lead the all-time series 19-11, but haven’t played the Horns at the Erwin Center since 1997, a Texas victory.

The Longhorns are 3-3 in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge overall entering its seventh season, winning all three games in Austin and losing all three games on the road.

The game will take on some added importance because it will feature Texas head coach Shaka Smart going against a former assistant in LSU’s Will Wade. The two first worked together when Smart was an assistant and Wade was a graduate assistant at Clemson in 2006 and 2007. When Smart took the VCU job, he hired Wade as his assistant, with Wade eventually replacing Smart in Richmond when Smart came to Austin.

Now the two will face off as coaches of major college programs.
