The Texas Longhorns will be without another safety this weekend, as Justin Wells of Inside Texas reported on Thursday afternoon that sophomore DeMarvion Overshown is suffering from a back injury.

On Thursday evening, Texas head coach Tom Herman confirmed the news to the media, saying Overshown has been diagnosed with a vertebrae injury and is now listed as week-to-week.

With Overshown now set to miss at least the Rice game, he’ll join fellow sophomore BJ Foster (hamstring) on the injury list. Foster injured his hamstring against LSU last weekend and will miss “at least a couple weeks,” according to Herman.

The safety position is the deepest on the team, but with Overshown joining Foster on the sidelines, it will change some of the options for defensive coordinator Todd Orlando — the Cowboy package, which features eight defensive backs, may be off the table, for instance.

Texas also may opt for more time in a nickel alignment rather than in dime, the so-called Lightning package. Against Rice, Texas will certainly play more linebackers, as the Owls often line up with two or three tight ends on the field, as head coach Mike Bloomgren was a longtime assistant for David Shaw at Stanford taking the job in Houston.
