HOUSTON — When the Texas Longhorns kick off against the Rice Owls on Saturday evening at NRG Stadium, the offense will be without senior wide receiver Collin Johnson, who will miss the game with a hamstring injury, according to school officials.

Johnson said this week that his hamstring was bothering him against LSU last weekend and it’s not healed enough for the medical staff to clear him against Rice. Through two games, Johnson has seven catches for 108 yards and one touchdown as opponents have often devoted a safety to bracket Johnson on the outside or rolled coverage in his direction.

So there might not be as much space for senior slot receiver Devin Duvernay and sophomore flanker Brennan Eagles, the primary beneficiaries of teams expending so many resources to stop Johnson.

The injury means that redshirt freshman Malcolm Epps will most likely see the most extended action of his career at the X position replacing Johnson, but it’s also possible that Eagles and senior John Burt could also see playing time.

Sophomore safety BJ Foster (hamstring) and sophomore safety DeMarvion Overshown (vertebrae) will also miss the game.
