A Texas Longhorns linebacker room already lacking ideal depth is now without another member of Tom Herman’s 2019 class, as former JUCO product Caleb Johnson has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, as first reported by Inside Texas Joe Cook.

Multiple other reports have since surfaced confirmed Cook’s report. According to one of those reports, from 247Sports’ Taylor Estes, “Johnson feels he has not fit in well since he arrived at Texas.”

The news comes just days after Texas wrapped up its non-conference slate with a 45-13 win over Rice, which allowed multiple members’ of the Longhorns’ two- and three-deep to see the field, as was also the case in the season-opening win over Louisiana Tech. Johnson, however, was not among that bunch, as he was yet to log his first reps as a Longhorn.

A former three-star prospect, Johnson signed with Texas as the nation’s No. 3-ranked JUCO inside linebacker prospect before becoming an early enrollee in January.

While Johnson does still retain the option to return to Texas, he reportedly informed the staff of his decision despite them encouraging him to take a bit more time to evaluate, per 247Sports, so it’s unlikely that Johnson ever suits up in burnt orange again.
