A homecoming may be in the works for Oklahoma Sooners running backs coach/special teams coordinator Jay Boulware, who emerged on Friday morning as the leading candidate to become the next tight ends coach/special teams coordinator for the Texas Longhorns, according to multiple reports, including Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.
On Thursday, news broke that Texas interviewed Kansas State senior special teams analyst Sean Snyder for the position, but Boulware makes more sense as a hire — he played offensive tackle for the Longhorns and has more experience as a position coach.
For the last seven years, Boulware has coached the running backs at Oklahoma, a stretch that has included six 1,000-yard rushers in the last five years and three NFL Draft picks since 2017. Prior to joining the staff in Norman, Boulware had stints coaching tight ends at Auburn, Utah, Arizona, and Northern Illinois.
As the special teams coordinator, Boulware’s units at Oklahoma produced nine touchdowns entering this season and included Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year Austin Seibert in 2018. Seibert was the first Sooners player to earn that recognition.
