Fearless Predicrions - To the End of the Year

Well, we've come to that point in Texas' life where Texas fans are wanting some heads to roll after the humiliating losses to TCU and OU...again. And I'm ready to turn the TV off for the rest of the season. Let's face it, both OU and TCU were in rebuilding stages compared to where Texas should be. And the only thing that has changed is, we are the #1 scoring offense in the country and 2 losses to, what I believe are lesser teams, to show for it. At this rate, I can only conclude 1 thing. Baylor and Kansas are our best chances for our only other next 2 wins. That's right, I said it. Texas has a shot at 2 more wins. And now that Baylor is coming off of all of their covid issues, and have something to play for, I'm not sure we shouldn't be prepared for some fireworks.

And the reasons are simple in my mind. For starters, no, it's not talent. We recruit among the top in the country with players who pick Texas over Bama, OU, TOSU and the like. Just look at the Texas Exes getting praise in the NFL right now that weren't even drafted. The NFL keeps asking where these guys came from. No, it's not talent. Texas is struggling in 2020 for 2 simple reasons.

1. Coaches can't develop their players to adjust mid game. So much of what we've seen over the last 3 and now 4 years are the same problems over and over. Players aren't developed to adjust well to the changes our opponents make mid game. And it leads to flashes of hot and cold. Lulls in the game, especially coming out of halftime, where Texas just looks out coached.

2. Of course, the problem is, what about that pesky, highest scoring team in the country. How are we so good at scoring but so bad at winning? And for me, the answer is, politics. I actually believe Texas is better than their record this year. Maybe not as great as we all hope, but better. However, the Texas players are divided. Granted, I'm not going to spend much time telling you what I think about the Eyes of Texas or the politics of it all, but I do know this, when one group on the team is for something so emotionally driven as race/politics, and another group on the team is against it, you have a division on your team. And divisions are never good. Again, not telling you what to believe about the politics, but consider how it looks when Sam marches down to the capitol with his team only to stand on the sideline, practically alone, and sing the Eyes. I can hear it now, "Hey man, we thought you were with us, we thought you were leading us." Texas isn't back, and now, their commitment is tested. Their unity is divided. And it's showing on the field. Whether everyone is told to sing the song or everyone is told not to sing, the worst thing Herman could have done was make it optional. And now that the fans are up in arms, CDC is having to step in and reverse the original directive. it's chaos. We are losing because under developed players are no longer a team. And it shows.

To that end, we're a 4 win team this year, 6 with some luck. That's all there is to it. The players aren't developed for, or committed to, winning at Texas' standard. CDC has already thrown his lot in with the donors and fans. Herman waffled but leans heavily toward the players. it's that simple.

Now, do I think Herman will be fired? The simple answer is - No! The political and medical climate of 2020, plus Herman's buyout, will prove to show he's back next year with another 7 win season. Plus, I think CDC will want to see how Ash and Mike gel as coordinators after 1 year under their belt. But I think it's coming. Sure, Brown and Royal took more than 4 years to win their first conference titles and DKR didn't hit 10 wins till year 5. But it's not the 60's. The donor and fan bases have changed so much and don't have patience for slow starts. They're calling for Meyer or Saban, even now!

Next year should be interesting!
