Bevo’s Daily Roundup: Texas president: ‘The Eyes of Texas will be played this weekend’

Texas Longhorns president Jay Hartzell spoke out Wednesday on whether the school’s band will perform “The Eyes of Texas” song, following a report in The Daily Texan that said the school band would not play the song and would not be attending the Baylor Bears game.

Hartzell said in a statement following the student paper’s report, per 247Sports, “‘The Eyes of Texas’ will be played this weekend as it has been throughout this season — and it will continue to be played at future games and events. While we would love the band be with our fans at all our games, we never planned for them to perform live this Saturday. We knew this summer that, as we make our campus a more welcoming place, we would face many hard conversations. I remain truly optimistic the we will find ways to join together around our song, which has been so positive for so many Longhorns over the past 120 years.”

• Texas women’s basketball junior Charli Collier earned an unanimous preseason Big 12 team nod, the Austin American-Statesman reports. From the Statesman: “The unanimous selection of Collier by the Big 12’s coaches was not a surprise. Collier is coming off a standout sophomore season in which she earned all-conference accolades. Collier led Texas with her 13.1 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She became the first Longhorn to average double-digit points and rebounds since the 1991-92 season.”
