Only two days after parting ways with longtime women’s basketball coach Karen Aston, Athletic Director Chris Del Conte has found her successor, as former Mississippi State coach has been hired as the next Texas Longhorns women’s basketball coach, the school announced on Sunday.

Hired at Mississippi State in 2012, Schaefer amassed a 221-62 record with the Bulldogs. Such success equated to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances in 2017 and 2018, and an Elite Eight appearance in 2018-19.
Most recently, in what ultimately ended as a shortened season due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, Mississippi State owned a 27-6 record.
Schaefer replaces the aforementioned Aston, who totaled a 184-83 record in Austin dating back to the 2012-13 campaign — the same season Schaefer took over in Starkville.
