On Thursday, the Big 12 Conference released the results of the 2020 media preseason football team, with five Texas Longhorns earning recognition — senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger, junior left tackle Sam Cosmi, junior Jack linebacker Joseph Ossai, junior cornerback D’Shawn Jamison, and junior safety Caden Sterns.
Oklahoma State senior running back Chuba Hubbard received the nod as the preseason Offensive Player of the Year, West Virginia defensive tackle Darius Stills was voted as the Defensive Player of the Year, and confidence continued in the ability of Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley to develop quarterbacks with sophomore Spencer Rattler named the Newcomer of the Year.
Here are the first teams:
Ehlinger is the active FBS leader career passing yards (8,870), passing touchdowns (57), total offense (10,400) and total touchdowns (93) and the first Texas quarterback to earn preseason All-Big 12 recognition since Vince Young in 2005.
No surprise there. The selection of Jamison does stand out, though — the junior flashed potential last season with three interceptions in nine starts, including a highlight-reel, one-handed grab against West Virginia, but it seems like a significant projection to suggest that he’ll become one of the conference’s best defensive backs this year. That will take some major growth.
Keep an eye on Ossai as a dark-horse Defensive Player of the Year candidate after his monster performance in the Alamo Bowl against Utah. Ossai checks all the boxes physically and mentally to take the next step and benefit from new defensive coordinator Chris Ash’s more friendly system.
