Report: Texas S BJ Foster will remain with team after quitting on Saturday

On the field, there wasn’t much drama for the Texas Longhorns on Saturday evening in a 59-3 demolition of the UTEP Miners at Darrel K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. On the sidelines, however, junior safety BJ Foster reportedly quit the team during the third quarter due to a lack of playing time.

According to Chip Brown of Horns247, Foster apparently had second thoughts pretty quickly — he lifted weights with his teammates on Sunday.

Then, on Sunday evening, Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods reported that Foster met with the coaching staff and decided to remain with the team. Coaches are expected to meet on Monday about Foster’s immediate future with the Longhorns.

A former consensus five-star prospect who ranked as the No. 24 player nationally in the 2018 recruiting class, Foster was a huge coup for Texas as part of a class that ranked No. 3 in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings.

After arriving on the Forty Acres, Foster made an immediate impact, starting six games and recording nine tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles, two quarterback hurries and five pass breakups. Last season, Foster played through a shoulder injury that required offseason surgery, but still started eight games, although his production decreased.

However, preseason camp clearly didn’t go as Foster envisioned — he lost his starting job to fifth-year senior Chris Brown and played sparingly in the first half against UTEP.

Now the question is what type of punishment Foster will receive for his rash decision on Saturday and how much playing time he can secure in a crowded safety room moving forward.
