The No. 8 Texas Longhorns are in Lubbock on Saturday for the Big 12 season opener, but third-string quarterback Hudson Card, a true freshman from Lake Travis, is not with the team as the Horns prepare to kick off against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

So Texas will have three quarterbacks available — senior starter Sam Ehlinger, redshirt sophomore backup Casey Thompson, and freshman scout-team player Ja’Quinden Jackson.

It wasn’t immediately clear why Card didn’t travel.

A consensus four-star prospect ranked as the No. 59 prospect and the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Card made his debut in the season opener against UTEP.

Card ran two times for eight yards, but was not able to complete his only pass, a fourth-down attempt in the red zone nearly caught by walk-on wide receiver Paxton Anderson. The most impressive play for Card came on a triple option that featured a lateral to redshirt sophomore tight end Malcolm Epps that went for 40 yards.

In other news, graduate transfers wide receiver Brenden Schooler switched from No. 81 to No. 14 as he prepares to get the start in the slot and freshman cornerback Kitan Crawford is now wearing No. 21.
