Longhorn football commits in action, Oct. 14-16

Seven commits are still unbeaten in 2021, and several playoff bids could be clinched this week.

Texas Longhorn commits Connor Robertson, Maalik Murphy, and Cole Hutson pose together at the Texas Tech-Texas game on September 25, 2021.

I’ve got a minimal amount of notes on this week’s games for the Texas Longhorns’ 2022 commits. In my defense, I was a bit busy finishing this piece.

Seven commits remain undefeated in 2021, and several of their teams will sew up playoff spots with wins this week. After this weekend, Texas high school teams will have three weeks left in their regular season, so each team’s playoff picture will be more clear in the next week or two. As always, the start time I have listed for each game is according to Central Time.

2022 QB Maalik Murphy — Gardena (California) Junipero Serra

Friday, October 15 at 9:00, at Los Angeles (California) Cathedral

Note: Murphy returned to the field for the first time in a month, completing 8 of 9 passes for 62 yards in last week’s 16-12 win over Chaminade.

Serra is now 3-3 and will travel to play 1-6 Cathedral on Friday. Cathedral’s mascot: the Phantoms!

2022 RB Jamarion Miller — Tyler Legacy

Friday, October 15 at 7:00, at Mesquite Horn

Note: Legacy suffered its third loss in four games after falling last week 57-28 to Rockwall, Class 6A’s 14th-ranked team. The Raiders are now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in district play. They will travel to face 1-5 Mesquite Horn on Friday.

2022 WR Brenen Thompson — Spearman

Friday, October 15 at 7:00, at Amarillo Highland Park

Note: Spearman had a bye last week, and in its previous game lost 38-37 to Canadian, the eighth-ranked team in Class 3A Division II. Spearman will next face a winless Amarillo Highland Park team that has been outscored by nearly 40 points per game this season. Brenen Thompson has not played in several weeks due to an injury and it is unknown when he will return to the field.

2022 WR Armani Winfield — Lewisville

Friday, October 15 at 7:00, at Plano

Note: Lewisville remained unbeaten with a 33-24 win over Flower Mound last week. Armani Winfield had 7 catches for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win, which improved the Lewisville Farmers to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in district play. They are ranked 20th in Class 6A and will next play 1-5 Plano, a once-proud program that has fallen on hard times. A loss to Lewisville will all but ensure that Plano misses the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season, a streak that school has not experienced since it missed the postseason in every year from 1952 to 1960.

2022 OL Cole Hutson — Frisco

Friday, October 15 at 7:00, vs. Denison

Note: Frisco had another dominating ground game last week, rushing for 487 yards in a 59-21 win over Princeton. The Raccoon’s offense produced 593 total yards on 54 plays, according to the game’s MaxPreps stats.

Frisco is 6-0 on the year and 4-0 in district play. The team should be able to clinch a playoff spot with a win on Friday against 5-1 Denison. Denison’s only loss was by a 49-7 score to Lovejoy, currently the third-ranked team in Class 5A Division II. Frisco entered the state rankings for the first time this week, coming in at #9, and it will face #3 Lovejoy next week.

2022 OL Connor Robertson — Austin Westlake

Thursday, October 14, vs. Buda Hays

Note: Westlake shut out Austin Bowie last week 35-0. The Chaparrals outgained the Bowie Bulldogs 506-187, and improved their record to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in district play. By winning their sixth game, they also ensured Westlake a 35th consecutive winning season, tied for the fifth-longest streak in state history. Converse Judson holds the record with a current run of 44 straight winning seasons, but its team is 2-4 in 2021 and in danger of ending that record streak.

Westlake should be able to clinch a playoff spot tonight with a win over 1-5 Buda Hays.

2022 DL Aaron Bryant — Southaven (Mississippi)

Friday, October 15 at 7:00, vs. Olive Branch (Mississippi)

Note: Southaven played another defensive struggle last week, losing 14-6 to South Panola. The Chargers are now 4-3, and have only had two games in which the teams combined for more than 30 points.

2022 DL Justice Finkley — Trussville (Alabama) Hewitt-Trussville

Friday, October 15 at 7:00, at Gadsden City (Alabama)

Note: I said in last week’s post that Hewitt-Trussville’s opponent, Vestavia Hills, was likely better than its 1-5 record, and that prediction was borne out. Hewitt-Trussville and Vestavia Hills were tied 28-28 going into the 4th quarter, but Justice Finkley’s team prevailed 49-35 and improved to 6-2.

With two games left in the regular season, the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies probably need at least one win to close out the season to reach the playoffs. On Friday they play 5-3 Gadsden City, a team they beat 48-12 a year ago.

2022 DL Kristopher Ross — Galena Park North Shore

Thursday, October 14 at 7:00, vs. Humble Summer Creek

Note: Having beaten Humble ISD teams Humble High and Kingwood in consecutive weeks by a combined score of 124-6, the North Shore Mustangs will look to “humble” three Humble victims in a row tonight when they face 4-2 Summer Creek. Last year’s matchup resulted in a 58-0 win for North Shore.

2022 DL Zac Swanson — Phoenix (Arizona) Brophy Prep

Friday, October 15 at 9:00, vs. Scottsdale (Arizona) Chaparral

2022 DE J’Mond Tapp — Donaldsonville (Louisiana) Ascension Catholic

Friday, October 15 at 7:00, at Baton Rouge (Louisiana) St. Michael

2022 DE/LB Derrick Brown — Texarkana Texas

Friday, October 15 at 7:30, at Longview Pine Tree

Note: Texas High beat Marshall 27-12 last week and is now 5-0 overall, and 3-0 in district. On Friday the Tigers face 4-2 Pine Tree, a team they have at least nine straight wins against, including a 44-0 victory in 2020. With a win, Texas would most likely sew up their district’s championship, as it would give it wins over each of the three teams that are currently 2-1 in district play, with their three remaining games coming against teams with a combined record of 2-16.

2022 LB Eoghan Kerry — Santa Ana (California) Mater Dei

Friday, October 15 at 9:00, vs. Rancho Santa Margarita (California) Santa Margarita

2022 DB Bryan Allen — Aledo

Friday, October 15 at 6:00, vs. Mansfield Timberview

Note: District 5-5A Division II is basically “Aledo and the seven dwarves”. Aledo is 6-0 this season and has outscored its three district opponents 162-21. The Bearcats beat Joshua 55-0 last week. At this time next week they should be 7-0.

2022 DB Austin Jordan — Denton Ryan

No game this week

Note: The 6-1 Ryan Raiders have their bye this week. They retained the #1 ranking in Class 5A Division I after a 42-3 win last week over The Colony.

2022 DB Ronald Lewis — New Orleans (Louisiana) Warren Easton

Saturday, October 16 at 2:30, vs. New Orleans (Louisiana) Carver Collegiate Academy

Note: Warren Easton fell 20-18 last week in its game against Edna Karr, Louisiana’s top-ranked Class 4A team. Easton fell from fourth to fifth in the rankings, and on Saturday will play unbeaten Carver, which is ranked eighth.

2022 ATH Anthony Jones — Henderson (Nevada) Liberty

No game this week

Note: Liberty is 7-1 and has one game remaining on its regular season schedule, which it will play on Friday of next week.

2022 K Will Stone — Austin Regents School

Thursday, October 14 at 7:00, at Boerne Geneva

2022 LS Lance St. Louis — Gilbert (Arizona) Williams Field

Friday, October 15 at 9:00, at Queen Creek (Arizona) Casteel

Other commits not playing this week

2022 RB Jaydon Blue (Klein Cain)

Cain opted out of playing in the 2021 season. Unless there is a change with his status I will not be posting Klein Cain’s weekly schedule.

2022 DL Jaray Bledsoe (Marlin)

After previously attending Bremond High School, Bledsoe transferred in the summer of 2021 to Marlin High School, which is 17 miles away. He was subsequently ruled ineligible for the 2021 football season, and in late August the U.I.L. denied his eligibility appeal. Unless there is a change in Bledsoe’s eligibility status, I will not be posting updates on Marlin’s season.

2022 LB Trevell Johnson (Arlington Martin)

After dealing with a hip issue for several months, Johnson attempted to play in week one, but afterwards elected to have a surgery that will cause him to miss his senior season. I will not be posting weekly updates on Martin’s games unless one of Johnson’s teammates commits to Texas.
