Longhorn Republic: Previewing the Red River Showdown

The Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners square off in the annual rivalry.

NCAA Football: Texas at Texas Christian Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Longhorns head into the Cotton Bowl to take on the Oklahoma Sooners with a chance to show whether or not they’ve actually made progress under new head coach Steve Sarkisian. Texas is fresh off of one of the wins that they needed in order to change the narrative and a win in the Red River Showdown would go a long way in determining the future for the Longhorns. Can Casey Thompson, Bijan Robinson and the Longhorns offense do enough to keep a very solid Oklahoma defense from dominating the game as they have in years past?

Defensively, Texas has had an up-and-down go of things, but the Sooners have had some offensive struggles thus far in 2021, especially on the ground. Can the Longhorns force the Sooners into an uncomfortable situation offensively and take advantage of an off-balance Spencer Rattler, who has dealt with a bit of regression this year, precipitated by regression on the offensive line?
