The Texas Longhorns are in need of some positive momentum after three late-game letdowns in as many games, but things don’t look to get any easier this week.
Heading to Ames to take on the Iowa State Cyclones is always a tough ask, especially with the Cyclones coming off of a successful month of October. Quarterback Brock Purdy put up nearly 1,000 yards in the month, leading the team to a 3-1 record Star running back Breece Hall was his normal stellar self, while the team as a whole avoided the special teams issues that cost them the game against the Baylor Bears
To help us break down the Cyclones, we reached out to Matthias Schwartzkopf (@MatthiasWRNL) of Wide Right and Natty Light to help us break down the matchup
Burnt Orange Nation: The meme has come to life year after year, but the month of Brocktober was once again a stellar outing for the quarterback, passing for nearly 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns. Why is he so good at the end of the year?
Matthias Schwartzkopf, Wide Right and Natty Light: No one really knows! That’s the beauty of it! In reality it just comes with adjustments and the offense finally finding their feet when things really start to matter in the Big 12. Ideally we would like to see that happen in September but for whatever reason we can’t really figure that out. Maybe someday!
BON: West Virginia went against trend against Iowa State a week ago, spreading out the defense and finding offensive passing the ball. What were the able to exploit in the ISU defense?
MS: It was just a really good plan piled on with the fact that there was no Mike Rose(due to injury) for the first time in four years. They attacked some holes that maybe just weren’t covered with different personnel in there and the really went after our number 2 corner spot which hasn’t been solid in over two years. Iowa State has some potential there at corner but it just hasn’t come to fruition yet.
BON: This is a battle of two of the running backs in the country in Breece Hall and Bijan Robinson. What’s your prediction for both backs in this game?
MS: I would imagine both will be near or over 100 yards in this one. Both will be high draft picks (in RB standards) obviously Bijan next year. So it’s pretty cool in one game you’ll have some really high caliber RBs going head to head. Obviously both fan bases could fight all day on which one is better. Both are really good, just leave it at that.
BON: What’s your prediction for the next random coaching job Matt Campbell will be tied to?
MS: Chicago Bears. (Go Bears btw) He will be on the list of every open job until he is done at Iowa State. The beauty of it is, he is his own agent. He don’t talk business until his season is over and that works out for us!
BON: What’s your prediction for the game?
MS: I got Iowa State 28-24, Texas will put some pressure on Iowa State. Should be a fun one.
