The Chicago Bears announced the hire of former Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman on Monday, adding him as an offensive analyst who will also undertake special projects.
Since Herman’s first coaching job as the wide receivers coach at Texas Lutheran in 1998, Herman has worked in college, so this is his first opportunity to work in the NFL.
Over four seasons at Texas, Herman compiled a 32-18 record and went undefeated in his four bowl game appearances. In 2020, the Longhorns went 7-3, finishing the year with a 55-23 victory over the Buffaloes in the Alamo Bowl, the second consecutive Alamo Bowl win for the program.
However, with recruiting suffering, including as a result of negative recruiting from players, and Texas failing to make the Big 12 Championship game for the second consecutive season, athletics director Chris Del Conte fired Herman four days after the bowl win.
The coaching search was a short one, as Del Conte and the Longhorns administration announced former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian as the program’s 31st head coach the same day.
