Texas G Jase Febres announces he will return next season

The guard will take advantage of his extra year of eligibility with the Longhorns.

The Texas Longhorns have holes to fill in Chris Beard’s first year at the helm, but will have a familiar piece back for next season as guard Jase Febres announced he will take advantage of his extra year of eligibility.

Febres played sparingly in the 2020-21 season, appearing in just 13 games after rehabbing from the knee injury that ended his junior campaign. Off the bench, he averaged 16.8 minutes a game, but played a big part in several late-season contests — including a 5-9 three-point performance in the conference tournament against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

He came to Texas as the No. 91 player in the country for the 2017 recruiting cycle, a class that also featured Mo Bamba, Matt Coleman and Jericho Sims.

Keeping the former starter on campus presents a big win for the Longhorns, as Texas has already lost Donovan Williams and Royce Hamm transfer, as well as Kai Jones to the NBA. Classmates Coleman and Sims are assumed to be NBA-bound as well, while junior guards Andrew Jones and Courtney Ramey, as well as freshman forward Greg Brown have yet to indicate a decision.
