Five-star Ponchatoula (La.) safety Jacoby Mathews announced on Tuesday evening that he has narrowed his list of schools down to six and the Texas Longhorns remain a contender for his services.

Mathews is the second-rated safety prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings and as a consensus five-star recruit.

The Longhorns, along with Arizona State, Clemson, Florida, LSU, and USC make up the stout list of finalists.

Texas reportedly been making a very solid push for Mathews’ services even with in-state LSU firmly in pursuit and Florida making a credible push as well.

Landing Mathews would be a huge coup for new head coach Steve Sarkisian’s staff, as they already managed to land BJ Allen, who was previously committed to LSU and are squarely in the mix for another ex-LSU pledge in Bryce Anderson.

Mathews is slated to make a trip to Austin this summer for an official visit, so the Longhorns will get a chance to roll out the red carpet for the five-star safety in the coming months.
