AUSTIN, Texas — Following the 57-7 win by the No. 7 Texas Longhorns over the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Friday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, head coach Steve Sarkisian provided an injury update on redshirt freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy, freshman running back CJ Baxter, and senior cornerback Ryan Watts.

Murphy was notably absent from the sideline for most of the second half with third-string freshman quarterback Arch Manning entering the game late in the third quarter instead of Murphy.

Sarkisian revealed that Murphy was injured on the 95-yard kickoff return touchdown by senior running back Keilan Robinson to open the second half.

“It was unfortunate on Keilan’s kick return, Maalik got caught watching the game and so we had to take him in and we’ve got to kind of see how injured he is, he kind of hurt his non-throwing shoulder. Hopefully we can get him back and get him healthy,” said Sarkisian.

On Sunday, Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods reported that Murphy could miss the Big 12 Championship game.

Later in the third quarter, Baxter went down on the field and left slowly after a two-yard run up the middle. Sarkisian said that Baxter suffered a hip pointer and didn’t return because of the large lead.

“We kind of looked at the scoreboard and said, okay, we’re going to be in good hands with Jaydon Blue and with Keilan and then Savion (Red) and obviously Tre Weisner,” said Sarkisian. “So it’s probably a coach’s decision more than anything — I think he could have went back in, but we just made a coach’s decision to do that.”

The injury to Watts happened on the second play from scrimmage along the Texas Tech sideline and left the senior cornerback down on the field for several minutes before he headed slowly to the locker room.

“Ryan Watts had kind of a back injury, but we’ll know more moving forward. I just saw him in the locker room, he’s in good spirits and so that’s a positive,” said Sarkisian.
