The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners are preparing to say their goodbyes to the Big 12, as the sweetheart rival programs prepare to pull the string on their golden parachute that will gently glide them into the SEC before the 2024 college football season. Filling that vacuum in the Big 12 will be the Houston Cougars, the UCF Golden Knights, the BYU Cougars and the Cincinnati Bearcats, all of whom have experienced recent success.
New Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark is mixing it up, too.
The Big 12 is reportedly considering playing games internationally; at first, for men’s basketball, according to the Houston Chronicle. From the Chronicle: “The University of Houston, which is set to join the Big 12 on July 1, has expressed interest and is on the short list of men’s basketball teams that could play in Mexico City as early as the upcoming 2023-24 season. The Big 12 has not finalized the teams that will play in the international games, but one possibility being discussed would feature a marquee basketball matchup between Houston and Kansas, a source said. ... Yormark recently visited Mexico on a fact-finding trip, meeting with various officials and touring potential sites, a source said. Arena CDMX, a 22,300-seat venue in Mexico City, is a candidate to host basketball games. A football game, likely at 53,500-seat Estadio BBVA — known as “El Gigante de Acero,” Spanish for “The Steel Giant” — has been targeted for the 2024 or 2025 seasons in Monterrey, a source said.”
